10m
Combine Base
In a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, plain yogurt, and sour cream. Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Add Flavorings
Gently fold in the non-pareil capers, finely chopped shallot, minced garlic, chopped fresh dill, salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
Add Hot Sauce
Add hot sauce according to your preference.
Season Dressing
Taste the dressing and adjust the seasonings as needed. Set aside.
3Combine Tuna and Dressing
10m
Layer Dressing
Add a layer of the prepared dressing to the bottom of the bowl with the tuna.
Add Tuna
Add the tuna on top of the dressing.
Add Vegetables and Nuts
Add the finely diced celery, bell pepper, optional fennel, and chopped almonds.
Mix Thoroughly
Mix everything well, ensuring the tuna and vegetables are thoroughly coated with the dressing.
Adjust Consistency
If the salad seems too dry, add more dressing and stir again until the desired consistency is reached.
4Prepare Tomato Bowls
5m
Cut and Scoop
Cut off the tops of the ripe tomatoes. Carefully scoop out the insides, including seeds and pulp, using a spoon. Discard the excess. Pat the inside dry if needed.
Fill Tomatoes
Fill each hollowed-out tomato with the prepared tuna salad, packing it in well so the salad fills the entire cavity.
Halve Large Tomatoes
If the tomatoes are very large, you can cut them in half horizontally before stuffing, depending on your preference for serving size.
5Serve
Chill and Serve
Serve the tuna salad-stuffed tomatoes chilled. This dish is perfect as a light lunch or an appetizer for dinner.
Alternative Servings
Alternatively, serve the tuna salad on toasted bread, in a sandwich, or alongside crackers for a delicious light meal.
Tips
For best flavor, allow the tuna salad to chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.
Ensure the canned tuna is drained very thoroughly to prevent a watery salad.
If serving in tomatoes, make sure to scoop out all the seeds and excess liquid to avoid a soggy presentation.
