Privacy Policy
RecipeOwl collects as little as it can to run the app. We don't sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
This policy covers the RecipeOwl apps and recipeowl.com (together, "RecipeOwl", "we", "us"). Using RecipeOwl means you've read it and agree to how we handle your data as described here.
What we collect
- Account. Your email address and name. If you sign in with Apple you can hide your real email, and we only see the relay address Apple gives us. We never see or store a password.
- Profile. A username you choose and, if you add one, a profile photo. The photo is optional.
- What you add. Recipes, photos, collections, meal plans, grocery lists, notes, and preferences such as units, diets, or ingredients you avoid. You decide what to enter.
- Imports. The link, photo, video, or text you give us to capture a recipe, kept with the recipe so it can be retried and credited to its source.
- Subscription. Whether you're subscribed and until when, as reported by Apple. Your payment details stay with Apple.
- Diagnostics. Crash reports, performance data, and a record of which features are used (for example "recipe saved"). These hold technical details only: app and system version, device model, and approximate country. They're linked to an account ID so we can fix problems, but they contain no name, email, or recipe content. We don't store your IP address with them.
- Notifications. A device token, only if you allow push notifications.
- Support. What you send us when you contact support, plus technical logs if you choose to include them.
We don't collect your location, contacts, health records, advertising identifiers, or payment card details.
How we use it
We use your data only to:
- provide the app and sync it across your devices,
- turn what you import into recipes, and tailor suggestions,
- check your subscription,
- send notifications and emails you can turn off in Settings,
- answer support requests,
- fix bugs, keep RecipeOwl secure, and prevent abuse,
- meet legal obligations.
Where privacy law asks for a legal basis, ours is providing the service you signed up for, our legitimate interest in keeping it working and secure, your consent where we ask for it (such as push notifications, which you can withdraw at any time), and legal obligations. You can unsubscribe from product and promotional email at any time.
Who we share it with
We don't sell or rent your personal data, and we don't share it for advertising. We share only what each service provider needs to do its job for us:
- LLM providers may receive the content you import or ask about, such as a link, photo, or ingredient list, so they can read recipes and prepare images. We don't send them your name or email.
- Sign-in through Apple or Google, if you use them.
- Apple for subscriptions and push notifications.
- Various Mail Providers to deliver sign-in codes and emails.
- Hosting and network providers that run our servers and protect them from attacks, including Cloudflare.
- Google Analytics on our website only, to measure visits. It isn't in the app and never sees your account or recipes.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it, to enforce our Terms, to protect the rights and safety of our users or RecipeOwl, or as part of a merger, sale, or transfer of the service, in which case this policy continues to apply.
What others can see
Your recipes are private unless you publish them. Published recipes can be seen by anyone, in the app, on the web, and in search engines, together with your username and profile photo. Anyone with a link you share, to a recipe or a collection, can open it. Unpublishing stops new views, but copies already made by search engines or other people are outside our control.
Keeping and deleting data
We keep your data while your account is open. You can delete your account in the app under Settings, or by emailing us from the address you signed up with. Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, private recipes, photos, collections, meal plans, and lists.
- Recipes you published that other people saved stay available to them, with your name removed.
- Diagnostics remain, but no longer connect to any name or email.
- Purchase records and support messages are kept as long as needed for accounting, legal, or dispute purposes.
- Backups are overwritten on a rolling schedule.
Deleting your account doesn't cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel it in your Apple Account settings.
Your data choices
You can view and change most of your data in the app, turn off notifications and marketing email in Settings, and delete your account at any time. Depending on where you live (including the EU, UK, and California), you may also have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your data, and to object to or restrict certain uses. Email [email protected] from your account email and we'll respond within the time the it requires.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and access is restricted to what's needed to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects you, we'll tell you as the law requires.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in countries other than yours. Where the law requires it, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Children
RecipeOwl isn't for children under 13, or the minimum age for consent in your country if higher. We don't knowingly collect their data, and we'll delete it if we learn we have.
Changes
We'll update the date at the top when this policy changes. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
