Soak Bread
Pour the custard into a cake pan or pie plate. Dip a slice of thickly cut bread into the custard, letting it sit for 20-30 seconds on each side.
Heat Skillet
Heat 2 tablespoons of melted butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
Fry Toast
Add the soaked bread to the skillet and let it fry for 3-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
4Keep Warm and Serve
10m
Keep Warm
Place the cooked french toast onto a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet in a 350°F (175°C) oven while you cook the remaining pieces.
Serve
Once every piece of toast is complete, stack on a plate, topped with butter and maple syrup.
Tips
Using slightly stale bread is key to achieving the perfect French toast texture, as it absorbs the custard without becoming too soggy.
Don't overcrowd the skillet when frying; cook in batches if necessary to ensure even browning and crispiness.
For an extra decadent treat, consider making the 'Fancy French Toast Custard' which uses cream and egg yolks for a richer flavor.
